Biography

Kristopher Carter is an Emmy®-winning composer best known for creating the heavy industrial-influenced main title theme to the groundbreaking series Batman Beyond. He won an Emmy® Award for Best Music Direction and Composition for this series as well as seven other Emmy® Nominations and five Annie® Award Nominations while composing music for such notable TV series as Teen Titans, Justice League, Ben10 and Batman: The Brave and the Bold.

Recent feature film and longform projects include Universal/Chiller TV’s SiREN, V|H|S: Viral, and Babylon 5: The Road Home (based on the popular 90s sci-fi series). He composed the music for the dark graphic novel adaptation Batman: The Killing Joke, as well as sci-fi mystery Yesterday Was A Lie, which won the Gold Medal for Best Use of Music in a Feature Film at the Park City Film Music Festival, and the indie horror favorite Dance of the Dead. He co-composed the Primetime Emmy®-nominated musical “Mayhem of the Music Meister,” starring Neil Patrick Harris, and has co-written songs for visual media performed by well-known actors including Mark Hamill, Tom Kenny (Spongebob), John DiMaggio (Futurama’s Bender), and Tara Strong (Powerpuff Girls’ Bubbles & Loki’s Miss Minutes).

Carter is both an orchestra conductor and pianist, conducting his music live at the Krakow Film Music Festival in Poland and the Fimucité Music Festival in Tenerife, Spain. A commission from conductor John Mauceri and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra led to a world premiere of his music at the legendary Hollywood Bowl. He also has had his music performed by LA-based Helix Collective and the Cinematic Symphony in Austin, TX.

Carter is composing a series of works for orchestra and piano solo, and appears on the recordings as piano soloist. The music videos for the first two works, Autumn Ruminations and Boreal Twilight, each received two Bronze Telly® Awards, with Boreal Twilight also winning several music video category awards on the film festival circuit between 2023-24.

As an electronic music producer and DJ under the moniker The Kr Protocol, Carter creates a cinematic experience for listeners with original tracks and remixes tailored to the dance club. He released his debut EP Activate in 2018 and produced “Desist (The Kr Protocol Remix)” for Minneapolis-based artist Dissociate.

He has performed live DJ sets at CONvergence, a large, Midwest science fiction/fantasy convention and online sets for the virtual edition of the Sundance Film Festival in 2022, record label GIVE/TAKE’s Midwinter 24 Virtual Showcase and an ongoing series of online dance events on MixCloud.

Carter is a passionate advocate for the art of film composition, presenting masterclasses to young film composers as well as seminars to filmmakers about the craft. Among the prestigious institutions he has lectured at are the University of Southern California (USC), UCLA, University of North Texas (UNT), Columbia College Chicago, CalArts, University of Texas at Austin (UT), North Carolina School For The Arts and Hong Kong Baptist University. He also served as the featured mentor at the inaugural Hollywood In Beijing Composer Intensive Workshop.

He regularly appears at sci-fi and comic genre conventions as a panelist on music for film, animation, and superheroes including San Diego Comic Con, Wondercon, LA Comic Con and CONvergence. He resides in Los Angeles.
